OFFICE OF THE LEADER OF OPPOSITION

Gujarat Vidhansabha, Gandhinagar.

 Press Note                                                                     17th August, 2011

By the appointment of Commissiontoinquire into charges of corruption against himself, Gujarat ChiefMinister Narendra Modi has proved that he feared Lokayukta most, Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil said in a statement here today.

Gujarat has institution of Lokayukta, but Modi does not appoint Lokayukta. Instead of this, he has appointedCommission which has no powers like Lokayukta, Gohil pointed out.

This is just because Chief Minister and his ministers are involved in corruption at a mammoth scale. Gohil said that this is precisely the reason for Modi not appointing Lokayukta for last seven and half years. As per the provisions of Lokayukta Act, Chief Justice of Gujarat has suggested the name of Justice R A Mehta for the post of Lokayukta. But Modi is illegally stalling the appointment.

It is surprising that Modi who is all praise for Anna Hazare does not appoint the judge who is a confidant of Anna Hazare. In Ahmedabad Hazare had stayed at the place of Justice Mehta. Judicial Commissions have no rights. Modi has appointed commission to cover up his shady deals.

Modi claims that he is honest and does not allow any kind of corruption. Then why is he avoiding Lokayukta ? If Modi is genuinely interested in inquiry into corruption charges, he should appoint Lokayujta immediately, Gohil demanded.
