Press Note                                            24th November, 2008

CLP corners lethargic Gujarat government

*Drought should be immediately declared in water scarcity hit area

* Work of Narmada canals should be completed immediately

*Demoralisation of police is worsening law and order situation

* December session of the Assembly should have question hour

Congress Legislature Party today adopted half a dozen resolutions inducting the lethargic and insensitive attitude of state government towards problems of common men and demanded immediate action. Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil who chaired the meeting said the decision to scrap question hour in the coming Assembly session was breach of privilege of members and it should be immediately restored.

The CLP pointed out that law and order situation in the state was fast deteriorating and held shortage of police staff and policy of fixed salary for new recruits responsible for this. Police strength should be proportionate to population. But it was not followed. Government should take immediate steps for this.

Referring to quite erratic rainfall in the state this year, the CLP said that some had drought conditions while some other were badly affected by heavy rains. Government should immediately order crop estimates so that farmers get relief by way of insurance crop. The government should ensure adequate power supply, it further demanded.

Because of incomplete canal-sub canal system, lots of Narmada water was flowing into the sea. Today, when farmers are facing water shortage and there is also problem of drinking water, state government should complete the canal network at the earliest, it demanded.

The CLP took serious note of government’s approach towards implementation of sixth pay commission and UGC scale to college teachers. It said that problems of salary of different categories of staff were pending for long and demanded a positive response from government towards these issues, Gohil said.
