JAIPUR: Leader of Opposition in Gujarat, Shaktisinh Gohil on Thursday called chief minister Narendra Modi an autocrat and said a reign of terror was prevailing in the state.

“There is no democracy in Gujarat under Modi; even the ministers and bureaucrats are living in terror,” Gohil claimed. “Bureaucrats who dare to oppose Modi’s illegal activities are put in jail, while the ministers’ personal staff is handpicked by the chief minister so that he can spy on them,” he said. Gohil, who was in Jaipur on a visit, was speaking to reporters at the PCC headquarters.

He claimed Modi was thriving on a thin margin of 2.6% votes over the Congress, which, he claimed, was slated to return to power in Gujarat in the next assembly elections in 2012. “The Congress will overcome this 2.6% margin in the coming elections. Politics of lies can’t last; even Hitler was ousted,” Gohil said.

The former Gujarat Congress minister said Modi has so far survived on a combination of Hindu sentiment and “money and muscle power”. “Post-Godhra, Modi played the Hindu card to get votes,” Gohil said, adding the people were now realising the chief minister’s strategy.

At the same time, the Gohil accepted responsibility for failing to counter Modi’s strategies so far. “We have failed to counter Modi thus far but the Congress is now sure to come to power,” Gohil asserted.

The Gujarat Congress leader praised the Ashok Gehlot-government for its “efficient” administration. “Instead of spending on public schemes, the BJP spends on advertising when in power,” Gohil said, comparing the Gehlot and Modi governments.

Gohil added there was resentment against Modi within Gujarat BJP, which was waiting to explode anytime.
